In the serial strangulation in Tokyo of 1995, five lives were brutally taken while the murderer remained at large. On the expiry date of the lawsuit, a family member of one victim committed suicide by jumping off a building. The detective responsible for the case, Makimura Kō (played by Hideaki Itō), continues to brood over the case. Two years later, Masato Sonezaki (played by Tatsuya Fujiwara), claims to be the murderer, becoming famous through his best-selling autobiography I Am a Murderer, and attracting the attention of detectives.
